Twilight, ya'll...
Okay, so I know I'm a little late weighing in on the whole Twilight movie thing...but for those
of you who have been asking, YES, I did see the film with Ms. Smith on the Friday it was released. And, for those of
you who are wondering what I thought? I thought it was an accurate reflection of the novel, and I thought that Edward
was well-cast, even though on the movie posters I was a little skeptical. I did think it was funny that in the middle
of the movie a girl yelled, "don't kiss her, marry me!" (you can guess which scene this happened during), and I really laughed
when Bella sniffed her shirt to see why Edward was holding his nose. For those of you hard-core fans, watch Ms. Smith
and I....in the next few weeks you'll see who we really like in the Twilight series....and it may not be the vampire you are
crazy for.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Last year Mrs. Williamson recommended I read this book, and her picks are always superb. So, over the summer I checked
out The Boy in the Striped Pajamas at the public library and devoured it. Not only was I moved by Bruno's (the
protagonist) innocent voice, but amazed at how the author commented on the horror of the Holocaust without revealing much
about the camps. One need only listen to Bruno to know the truth of the Holocaust--millions of innocents lost their
lives because of hatred and apathy.
The movie was equally fantastic. I sat in awe while the producers matched the pictures that were in my mind.
When the movie was over there was complete silence in the theater (amazing) with only the sound of sniffles and flowing tears.
I would highly recommend that you see this movie. Then, when you have read the book and watched the film, research the world
today. Have other tragedies like the Holocaust happened more recently? You may be surprised with the answer.

Racism is NEVER okay....
Yesterday and today I have heard students making comments about our President Elect of the United States. Comments are
fine...I mean, we do have freedom of speech in this country. We can criticize, predict, observe...What we do NOT
have the freedom to do is threaten the President Elect of the United States or insult him because of his race. A
few students here at WOMS have been pretending to shoot pictures or television images of Obama that may be
on Channel One News. I have overheard racial comments in the hallways. Shame on those students. Pretending
to murder someone, even in jest, is wrong. Insulting someone because they don't look like you in the mirror is also
wrong. When you behave this way it reflects poorly on you and your family. Show respect to the guy sitting beside
you...or the girl. She might be your president one day.

Trick or Treat!
Oh how I wish that I were young again, if only to be allowed to fly my broom around (JK) and collect candy from neighbors. I
have always loved Halloween. Some of my favorite costumes have been: the year my brother and I were a pair of dice, the year
I was a rainbow, complete with spikey yellow hair and painted face with a pot of gold stuck to my rear end, the year
I went to my first Halloween party as a conservative Elvira (big mistake) and so many more. So please, collect some candy
this year for Kilby and be safe for crying out loud. No tricks, okay? Only treats.
Wish Ms. Burk a Happy Birthday today!

Dude...vote!
I have a confession to make. I usually don't watch the presidential debates (I know, old ladies like me are supposed
to watch these). I mean, there's usually a show on that I want to watch or a re-run movie on cable. I do go to the candidate's
websites and listen to news on the radio once in a while, but not the debates. For some reason last night I did. I
am so glad I did! Now I know that I have to make my decisions with all of those resources. There is no mistaking it,
the United States has some serious issues when it comes to money. It was really interesting to see these two candidates
"duke it out" in debate over what each had planned for their presidency. On October 20-24th YOU, Yes YOU! will have
the opportunity to vote through the library website on the candidate you would like to see elected. The results will
be posted for our school on the library website, and will be on Channel One News...so dude, vote!
